Aviation Insurers Assess Exposure Following Attacks in Saudi Arabia

Aviation insurance underwriters are reviewing coverage terms following recent attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Dammam International Airport, according to market sources cited by Reuters. Industry participants remain divided over whether to introduce additional premiums or issue notices of cancellation across relevant policies.
Senior insurance brokerage sources noted that formal notices of cancellation have not yet been issued for Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector. However, an underwriting source stated that a cancellation notice had been issued regarding all-risks coverage, a detail Reuters could not independently verify. Market sources indicated that limited access to official data from Saudi Arabia continues to complicate risk assessments.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of Saudi Arabia announced that operations at King Khalid International Airport, the country’s second busiest hub after Jeddah, remain suspended to verify facility readiness and operational integrity. A notice to air missions (NOTAM) issued to flight crews confirmed that the airport will remain closed until the evening of October 17, following a suspension in effect since Saturday.
